Company of Heroes 3 PC Performance Analysis
SEGA and Relic have released Company of Heroes 3, the next installment in the Company of Heroes series. Powered by Essence Engine 5.0, it's time to benchmark it and see how it performs on the PC platform.
For this PC Performance Analysis we used Intel i9 9900K, 16GB DDR4 @ 3800Mhz, AMD Radeon RX580, RX Vega 64, RX 6900XT, RX 7900XTX, NVIDIA GTX980Ti, RTX 2080Ti, RTX 3080 and RTX 4090. We also used Windows 10 64-bit, GeForce 528.49 and Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 23.2.1 drivers.
Relic has applied very few graphics settings to fine tune it. PC gamers can adjust the quality of Physics, Shadows, Textures, Geometry and Anti-Alias. The game also supports unrestricted frame rates and has a resolution scaling setting.
Company of Heroes 3 does not have any built-in benchmarking tools. For our CPU and GPU tests, we used a 3v3 Skirmish match on a large map. In theory, this should give you an idea of how the game will progress in such matches.
We simulated a dual-core, quad-core, and six-core CPU to find out how the game scales across multiple CPU threads. And we are happy to report that the game does not require a high-end CPU. At 1080p/Max Settings, our simulated dual-core system always managed to get over 100fps. However, we did have some stuttering issues without Hyper-Threading. By enabling Hyper-Threading, we were able to eliminate stuttering on that particular system.
At 1080p/Max Settings, our top five GPUs managed to hit well over 100fps at all times. The AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 managed to deliver a smooth gaming experience, albeit with some drops at 52fps. The game uses DX12, and unlike other titles, the AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX can't beat NVIDIA's RTX 4090 (although it can barely match its performance).
At 1440p/Max Settings, our top five GPUs had no issues running the game. As for Native 4K/Max Settings, our top four GPUs were able to deliver a steady 60fps experience. RTX2080Ti owners will need a GSync-FreeSync monitor to get a smooth gaming experience as we noticed some drops to 51fps.
Graphically, Company of Heroes 3 looks great. It retains the realistic art style and color palette as in previous COH games. Also, it has a great building demolition system. The game could use even higher resolution textures (especially when you zoom in), but that's a nitpick. Overall, the game looks great.
As a result, Company of Heroes 3 performs well on PC. While not as fast as The Settlers: New Allies, it does offer a more realistic color palette as well as better environmental interactivity/destructibility. Honestly, this feels like a better takeaway than The Settlers: New Allies. I know, I know, they're two different strategy games. However, we are speaking only from a technical/visual point of view. However, we should also note that the game suffers from minor shader compilation stutters. Fortunately, and since this is a strategy game, these stutters will go away in a few minutes. Still, this is something to keep in mind!
