Season 3 added three cool maps and the best halo gun since its arrival.


It's a good time to return to the 2021 shooters that received critical acclaim upon release. In case you haven't heard, Battlefield 2042 is really good right now (opens in a new tab), and I'm starting to feel better about Halo Infinite Multiplayer after last week's Season 3: The Update red hawk


First, the good stuff: Season 3 added two new Arena maps (Chasm and Cliffhanger) and a large team battle map (Oasis). Halo Infinite has been in dire need of map injections since launch day and I'm happy to report that all three have been winners so far. I especially enjoy Chasm, which might take the award for Halo-est Halo map 343 that hasn't been released yet.


The Chasm is basically two hallways in an unspecified alien facility divided by an endless chasm (or chasm if you will), connected only by a few light bridges and floating hexagonal platforms that resemble a 3D platformer. are arranged.


The Proportional Stardown of Rival Halls is perfect for mid-level fights with Battle Rifle Bros or Pistol Professionals. Since most of the space between you is a pit of death, you stay on your side and on your side until the fight is over, which is a nice change from the usual "one-on-one while shooting." Run into the other and then hit each other. Encounter" Hello Tactic. It's more spacious than it sounds, but not so big that whoever takes the sniper rifle upstairs automatically dominates the map.

There's something very "original Xbox Halo" about Chasm that I haven't quite put my finger on. It's a cool, geometric alien texture that reminds me of the early multiplayer days of Halo, but I think it's more realistic that it's the kind of simple, blocky map that never got the greenlight in another modern FPS. does Can you imagine a Call of Duty map that is mostly negative space? Chasm screams old-school PC arena shooter, a club I believe Halo: CE belongs to despite its Xbox origins.

You know what else feels good in chasm? Halo Infinite's first new gun, which happens to be the return of my favorite old Halo gun, the DMR. The Infinite version is called the M392 Bandit, a semi-automatic kinetic rifle designed to click heads. It fires slightly slower than its popular halo-reach predecessor and has more aggressive recoil than the Battle Rifle, but this time between shots locks you into a rhythm that makes it easier to land consecutive hits. I don't think it's going to take off the battleship any time soon, but I'll take it over its full-auto little brother, the Commando, any time.


You'll find Bandit in weapon lockers on arena maps, but where I'm most excited to see it is in a large team fight. 343 added a "BTB Unlimited" playlist this week that replaces the default pistol loadout with a bandit/assault rifle combo, closing the loop on the Halo Reach troback in a way that I hope is permanent.

A surprisingly good addition for Season 3 is Halo Infinite's team-based twist on the Gone game. Instead of a heated exchange between a single gun, the teams go with a loose thread between 11 pairs of weapons. I'm pretty good at Infinite Marquee's seasonal modes so far (Last Spartan Standing was a flop for me), but Escalation's Slayer is getting beat right up. Gunplay fits particularly well in games with a variety of weapons like Halo, and making it a team sport was a smart move - in other games, situations can often end abruptly when a dominant player The gun ends up snowballing. the ladder


There is a free escalation mode for gunplay purists, but I haven't come across it in normal matchmaking yet.


The quality and quantity of items in Season 3 is as encouraging as those who loved it and then quickly abandoned the game at launch. It finally feels like there are better things to do in Infinite—the mile-long playlist selection helps, and it's great that you can now play Mario Kart in a faithful recreation of DK Mountaineer. One part of Halo Infinite that still remains in 2021 is its new 100-tier Battle Pass. I'm probably level nine on this thing and already bored to tears. It's a lot easier to earn XP these days, which is great, but the pass is once again littered with individual armor pieces and disappointingly few gun skins. And that's if you're a premium spender—the free lane is the only street lined with awesome non-rewards like challenge sweepstakes tokens.


Since there doesn't seem to be any design change at 343, here's how I would fix it: Take the armor from the Battle Pass and make it its own thing. Dressing my Spartan in personalized armor like a tactically cool barbie is fun, but unlocking in a linear path makes it difficult to imagine and work towards achieving the "perfect look".


It would mean so much more if instead of unlocking random pauldrons for being level 11, I had to complete unique challenges to get a cool samurai helmet. I basically describe Call of Duty's system for unlocking weapon camouflages, a progression ladder that annually inspires millions of people to play this game for a year and manages to coexist with a separate Battle Pass. And before 343's monetization department has a heart attack, you can still sell those overpriced skins!


Anyway, the Halo update is good. I have fun. I hope 343 takes advantage of that momentum and turns Halo Infinite into one of those feel-good comeback stories a year from now.
