Defiant Keys are the main currency that you can unlock while playing various in-game activities so you can use them to unlock chests in Season of Defiance missions. This currency is different from the regular currency that you accumulate through quests, mission playlists, strikes, patrols and other modes in the games.

Remember that once you complete this seasonal activity, the Defiant Key is used immediately.
